How Does Protein Structure Determine Function?

A protein's three-dimensional structure influences its ability to interact with other molecules. Specific regions of a protein, such as active sites or binding domains, allow it to recognize substrates, ligands, nucleic acids, or other proteins.

For example, enzymes contain active sites that facilitate particular chemical reactions. Receptors recognize signaling molecules and initiate cellular responses, while antibodies bind specific molecular targets.

Changes in protein structure can affect molecular interactions and biological activity. Mutations, environmental conditions, and chemical modifications may alter protein folding, stability, or function.
